Are you looking for an easy and proven way to make a horsehair shoe brush at home that is fully customized according to your desire? If so, you’re at the right place! We’ll cover this topic in detail.
Before we start, I want to let you know that we can make different types of shoe brushes, each suited for specific tasks and preferences.
Like long-handled brushes, travel shoe brushes, single-sided shoe brushes, and dual-sided brushes.
But today we will make single-sided shoe brushes as seen in the above Image. So let’s move to the process by gathering the necessary materials for the shoe brush.
1: Required things for Shoe Brush
Here are the names of materials that we will be working with. I’ll also explain them in detail so you can choose the best material based on your needs.
Before choosing materials, read below where I discuss what to pick and what to avoid.
Things are Required:
- Horsehair (natural or synthetic)
- Wooden block (for the handle)
- Strong adhesive (Glue) or epoxy
- Drill Machine with Small Diameter Bit
- Scissors
- Sandpaper
- Wood finish or sealant (optional)
Alright, Let’s dive into each items step-by-step, covering all you need to know from start to finish. See you below!
1: Horsehair (natural or synthetic)
Our first material on the list is horsehair (bristle). If you don’t know what horsehairs are, here is a short introduction that will be enough to define:
The hairs we collect from Horse’s Tails and Manes are called horsehairs and they are used in making durable brushes and handmade crafts. Now let’s come back to the topic.
When selecting horsehairs for shoe brushes, we have two main options: (1) Natural Horsehair and (2) Synthetic Horsehair. Let’s see what they are and which option suits our needs best.
(1) Natural Horsehair:
Natural horsehairs are those we get directly from horses and brushes made with them are great for cleaning and polishing because it’s soft and long-lasting without losing shape.
It also has a traditional, authentic look that many people love for its classic style and performance.
Negative Side: We have to take proper care of these hairs because they can get dirty, lose their shape, and wear out quickly if not properly maintained.
(2) Synthetic Horsehair:
Synthetic horsehairs are made from nylon or polyester fibers. They are melted, stretched, shaped, and cut to look like real horsehair (which cannot be obtained directly from horses).
It’s very durable, long-lasting, and requires less maintenance. These qualities make it perfect for those wanting high performance with less effort, without compromising on beauty.
Negative Side: Synthetic horsehair may not have the same natural feel and effectiveness as real horsehair. It can also be less effective for some specific cleaning tasks.
(3) Which One Should You Choose?
Choosing the best horsehair for shoe brushes under our requirements can be a little tricky. But to assist you in deciding, I’ve outlined below, both natural and synthetic options for comparison.
➜ Natural Horsehair:
If you want traditional and authentic materials and quality isn’t a top priority for you, then natural horsehair is a good choice for your shoe brush.
However, it’s important to note that natural horsehair isn’t very strong or durable. Some people still choose it for its unique feel on shoes.
Note: Make sure it’s collected in a way that respects animals.
➜ Synthetic Horsehair:
The synthetic horsehair is known for being strong, easy to care for, and the same results with each use. However, in some situations, synthetic horsehair may not look like natural horsehair in appearance.
If you want your synthetic horsehair to look like natural hair, choose high-quality synthetic fibers (easily found in craft stores).
Hopefully, you have found your answer here, Now let’s move on next:
2: Wooden block (for the handle)
Wood is the most important part of a shoe brush. When choosing wood, we cannot compromise on quality because wood is the base of our shoe brush.
We’ll focus on three things before picking the wood for our shoe brush, Alright?
1. Wood type:
When choosing a wood type, I strongly recommend woods like oak, maple, or walnut because they are known for their durability and long lifespan.
Avoid softer woods like pine or cedar, which may not have the same durability and could wear out faster.
Choosing strong wood like Oak, Maple, or Walnut is a good start, but there are also other factors to consider. Let’s explore them as well.
2. Grain and Finish:
Pick wood in hand and look closely at the lines in the wood and also check how smooth it feels. Tight lines in the wood mean the wood is stronger and not easy to break or crack.
And a smooth finish in wood not only looks nice but also makes the handle easier to hold. It reduces the chance of getting sore hands when you use it for a long time.
3. Size and Shape:
It’s important to choose the right size of wood for our shoe brush. If it’s too long or too short, it can be uncomfortable to hold and The brush may not fit well in storage boxes.
To select the right size, start by holding a wooden block in your hand to see how it feels. It should be just right the size of your hands, not too big or too small.
If you use a brush regularly then I suggest making handles curved or shaped, It will be more comfortable to hold and reduce strain on your hands.
Got it? Awesome! Now, let’s move on to the next step. If you feel anything hard to understand you can ask me in the comment section. I’m always here to help you understand. Okay?
3: Strong Adhesive (Glue) or Epoxy
We can consider glue to be an important component of our horsehair shoe brush because If we don’t use strong and waterproof glue, the horsehair will come loose and fall out of the wooden block.
Therefore, we need to choose strong and waterproof glue for our shoe brush. Let’s discuss about Points to Consider and Points to Avoid while selecting glue for a horsehair shoe brush.
Points to Consider:
When choosing a glue for making shoe brush, look for one that creates a strong bond between the wood and horsehairs.
Ensure the adhesive is designed for this purpose and the adhesive is waterproof and can handle different weather conditions. This will help our shoe brush work better and last longer, even if wet.
Points to Avoid:
Stay away from weak adhesives that don’t bond securely to wood and hair.
They can lead to hair falling out eventually. Also, avoid adhesives that aren’t waterproof or durable because they can’t hold up to moisture or temperature changes effectively.
If you want my recommendation, here’s the glue I suggest for making a shoe brush. Click here to check it out.
4: Drill Machine with a small bit
When selecting a drill machine, keep these two things in mind. First, when choosing a drill machine, make sure it has the correct size bits for precise hole-making and choose sharp drill bits for stable and accurate drilling.
Second, avoid using dull drill bits because they can create uneven holes & cause the material to crack.

◈ 24-Position Clutch: Prevents stripping and overdriving screws, giving you added control during tasks.
◈ PowerConnect Battery System: Use one battery for multiple BLACK+DECKER tools, ensuring convenience and efficiency.
Selecting a drill machine isn’t rocket science. You can also try an awl for this purpose, But making holes in wood with an awl is quite challenging. I suggest using a drill machine for accurate results.
5: Scissors and Sandpaper
This step doesn’t have anything particularly important to discuss because everyone has these items at home. If you already have scissors there’s no need to buy new ones. It will only be used in trimming extra horsehairs.
And, If you don’t have sandpaper, pick normal sandpaper.
You don’t need to spend a lot; only focus on getting something durable. One thing, if you want something stronger and longer-lasting than sandpaper, I would recommend you to use Emery cloth.
If you don’t know what emery cloth is, Here’s a short introduction, and click here to see the difference between sandpaper and emery cloth:
Emery cloth is a tough and flexible sanding material with a cloth backing that has rough emery grains on it. It’s perfect for smoothing and polishing metal surfaces, but it can also be used on wood and plastic.
Emery cloth lasts longer and works better than regular sandpaper for tough jobs.
6: Wood finish or sealant
Finally, this is our last thing to collect to start making a horsehair shoe brush.
It is optional but if you want to use it, that’s amazing because It will add a protective layer on our shoe brush to protect from different weather and damages.
Let’s start with a little introduction of Wood Finish and then we will discuss the Advantages and Disadvantages of using it.
Introduction:
Wood finish is a protective coating that enhances the durability and appearance of wood, making it look better and last longer.
Advantages:
◈ Protection: It keeps the wood safe from moisture and stops it from bending and cracking.
◈ Beauty: It brings out the natural beauty of wood grain, giving your brushes a shiny & professional look.
◈ Durability: Applying a wood finish makes handles more damage-resistant, extending their lifespan and making them easier to clean.
Disadvantages:
◈ Time: Applying a Wood finish or sealant can be time-consuming, requiring multiple coats and drying times. Typically, each coat needs almost 4 to 6 hours to dry before the next one can be applied.
◈ Color Change: Some finishes can slightly change the color of wood when they soak into the surface to form a protective layer.
My recommendation for wood finish is Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish. As I mentioned in the footer of this website If you buy from our link, We get little commission. Don’t worry It will not charge you any extra penny.
2: Process to make Horsehair Shoe Brush
Alright, I am sure you have collected all the required items. Now, it’s time to start making our Horsehair Shoe Brush. Before starting the process, We need to talk about some safety tips to make sure you stay safe while making your shoe brush:
➜ Safety Tips:
◈ Place: When sanding, drilling, or applying finishes, wear safety glasses and work in a well-ventilated area for your safety.
◈ Patience: To create a durable and attractive shoe brush, take your time with each step, and read again if you don’t understand anything.
Step 1: (Preparing the Wood Handle)
Our first step is to shape the wood for the shoe brush. You can skip this section if you already have a shaped wooden block according to your desired brush size.
Still, you should read this section, because you will probably find something helpful. This process is divided into 3 sections: (1) Initial Sanding, (2) Detail Sanding, (3) Final Touch. Let’s get started!
First, if the wooden block isn’t fitting in your hand, trim it until it feels just right, and then we will smooth the wooden block.
(1) Initial Sanding:
Start with Sandpaper or use an Emery cloth. Both are good for smoothing rough spots without damaging the wood. Let’s get into it:
1: Preparation: Place your wood block on a stable surface, like a workbench, to keep it in level.
2: Sand Evenly: Hold the sandpaper firmly and sand all sides of the wood block evenly. Apply consistent pressure to avoid creating uneven surfaces.
3: Circular Motion: Use circular or back-and-forth motions to cover the entire surface. For example, if your wood block is rectangular, start sanding the longer sides first, then move to the shorter sides.
(2) Detail Sanding:
After the initial sanding, spend extra time on the rough edges and corners. We will smooth all the remaining edges and corners of the wooden block in this step:
1: Edges and Corners: Fold the sandpaper to create a sharp edge and rub it into the corners and along the sides of the wooden block.
2: Check Smoothness: Run your fingers around the edges and corners to check the remaining rough spots. If you find any rough spots, keep sanding them until they are smooth.
(3) Final Touch:
After sanding and making the wooden block smooth, our final step is to remove all the dust from the wood surface to check uneven areas of the block.
1: Wipe Down: Take a shoe cloth that’s slightly damp with water and rub it on the wooden block to avoid raising the wood grain.
2: Drying: After wiping, let the wood dry completely. It will take around 2-5 minutes.
In this step, our goal was to make the handle as Comfortable & Smooth as possible. Let’s recheck our wooden block to ensure everything is perfect.
2. Apply the Wood Finish
Now, We will apply wood finish on our wooden block because it will make it durable and protect it from damage. We will apply 3 Coats of wood finish, Let’s see below how:
Applying the First Coat:
Before applying, clean dust from the wood with a cloth. Now, take a paintbrush or cloth and apply the first coat of wood finish. Make sure you cover all parts of the wood evenly.
Tip: Apply the finish in thin layers and follow the direction of the wood grain to avoid streaks and bubbles.
Let the first coat dry for approximately 4 to 6 hours. Check the instructions on the finish manufacturer’s box for exact drying times.
Applying the Second Coat:
Before applying the second coat, lightly sand the handle (wood) with sandpaper to smooth out any bumps or imperfections. When sanding, don’t press too hard because it will remove too much finish from the wood.
Again, Use a slightly damp cloth to clean the dust, and then let the handle dry for 3 minutes.
Now, Apply a second coat of finish using the same method as before, applying the finish thin and following the direction of the wood grain.
Let the second coat dry for another 4 to 6 hours for perfect results.
Applying the Third Coat:
Repeat process like 2nd Coat, Lightly sand the handle after the second coat has dried. Then wipe away any dust with a damp cloth and let the handle dry.
And like before, apply a third coat of finish and wait approximately 24 hours. This will give your wood a polished appearance and protect it from weather.
3. Drill Holes for the Bristles
First, draw an equally spaced circle with Marker or Chalk on the wooden block where you’ll drill the holes. It will make our brush look neat and professional.
Now, create holes with the drill machine where you’ve marked with chalk on the wooden block. Remember, we have to drill to a specific depth where the horsehair roots will be fixed.
4. Prepare the Bristles (Horse-Hairs)
Make a small bunch of bristles, then fill each hole you drilled in the wooden block with them. After filling all the holes, choose the length of the bristle you want (usually around 1 to 2 inches long).
Now, take scissors and trim the extra bristle length. Take your time to ensure each bristle is cut evenly.
5. Attach the Bristles (Horse-Hairs) with Wood
We’ve almost finished our horsehair shoe brush. Just two more things to do, and then you’ll have made your first shoe brush. Remember, This step is very important for us because using low-quality glue can ruin all the work we’ve done on this horsehair brush.
Alright, let’s use adhesive to attach the horsehairs to the wooden block. Let’s see how to apply the glue!
- Start by taking out the bunches of bristles we made earlier and put them into the holes in the wood. After removing the bristles, carefully apply a small amount of glue to the base of each bristle bundle.
- Now, gently press the glued end of the bristles into the holes in the wooden block. Make sure they are securely attached.
- Do the same for each hole until all are filled with bristles. Ensure the bristles are firmly attached to the wood and evenly spaced.
- Allow the glue to dry completely (usually around 4 to 6 hours).
Don’t apply too much glue because it will create a mess and make our shoe brush look dirty and not professional.
6. Final Touches
Hurrah! We’ve made our first horsehair shoe brush! Now, our task is to add some final touches and give it a little inspection.
- Inspect the Brush: Take a close look to ensure all the bristles (Horsehairs) are firmly attached to the wood. If you spot any uneven bristles (horsehairs), trim them with scissors to make them look smooth.
- Wood Finishing Touches (Optional): If you want to make the brush more attractive, first lightly sand the handle one more time, this will make it smoother. Now add a coat of wood finish for extra protection and a shiny look.
Following these steps will make sure your shoe brush looks good and works well, staying durable and useful for a long time.
